Research
My project aims to identify photoreceptor subtypes in Pomacea canaliculata, commonly known as the golden apple snail, and the genes regulating their regeneration after eye amputation. These snails have remarkable regenerative abilities that are largely unexplored, so my work requires optimizing laboratory techniques such as single nuclei RNA sequencing and in situ hybridizations to be able to shed light on the molecular mechanisms driving the regeneration of their visual system. Understanding these mechanisms could give us insight into targets for future regenerative therapeutics to treat photoreceptor degeneration, one of the leading causes of blindness in humans.
